Peripheral device

1 Peripheral device :

8 bit microprocessor  include peripheral chips that that are used with the C.P.U. to provide many of Input / output  function.

A microprocessor combined with memory & Input / Output devices forms a micro computer but selected memories & Input / Output devices should be compatible.

To communicate with outside world microprocessor  use peripherals i.e. Analog to Digital Converter (ADC),  Digital to Analog Converter (DAC),  CRT, Printer, Hard disk, Floppy disk etc.

Peripheral can be connected to micro-computer through the electric circuit that’s known as interfacing circuit.

Each Input / Output devices requires  a separate interfacing circuit that convert data available form an microprocessor into a derired  format to Output device.

Some general purpose & special purpose single chip interfacing  devices are :
a.       Input / Output Port.
b.      DMA controller.
c.       Programmable peripheral interface (PPI).
d.      Interrupt controller.
e.      Communication interface.
f.        Programmable counter / Interval timer.

Special purpose single chip interfacing  devices are :
a.       CRT controller.
b.      Floppy disk counter.
c.       Key-board & Display interface.

1.2 IC 8259 Programmable interrupt controller.
1.3 IC 8279 Programmable Keyboard / Display interface.
1.4 IC 8253 Programmable interval timer.
1.5 IC 8251 Programmable communication interface.
1.6 IC 8155 Multipurpose Programmable device.
